OUR CAUSES

The debate over dress codes has long been in the schools of our country. With ideas ranging from loose dress policies to severely harsh ones, many administrations have decided to take the latter in an attempt to better behavior, grades, and safety. We undoubtedly believe that schools should adopt reasonable, fair, and just dress codes that have security and decorum in mind, but what should not be instated, is an overly strict and despotic policy that not only hurts the students, but the parents as well.

The success of a student is not just contingent upon the required knowledge he or she gains for the next level, but also upon whether or not the student maintains that knowledge moving up academically. In trying to augment scores and cut away at knowledge lost during the summer, some school faculties and districts are implementing year-round school policies. SVA opposes any form of year round school scheduling, as studies(1) show that students do no better in a year round system than in a regular school schedule. It is not a change in scheduling that will improve scores. It is a change in content taught that will improve them.
